The Proximans

Tall, lanky, inhuman, peaceful beings that blur the boundary between flora and various types of fauna.

They have two arms and four legs, easily standing at an average of 9ft (274cm) for males and 8ft 10in (269cm) for females, and being of light weight with males weighing roughly 170lbs (77kg) and females weighing around 155lbs (70kg). Each hand has five fingers and one thumb; each foot has four frontal toes and two larger hind toes.

Their skull is over all broader and squarer than Human’s. Their face is composed of four broad, entirely black eyes; one on either temple of their foreheads and two separating the distance across their foreheads between the side eyes into equal portions. The portion of their face that would on a human be composed of a nose, mouth, and cheeks is instead covered by seven slits which form a sort of gill like vent on their face.

This “vent” acts as their primary facial orifice, combined with two gill like structures on either side of the backs of their heads; air passes into the primary front vent, through their respiratory/digestive system, and then out through the back two vents. In this fashion, Proximans do not have a highly distinguishable inhale or exhale, but rather have a constant flowing breath. Proximans breathe oxygen, which they get through this flowing breath process. Proximans do have lungs and a diaphragm, which are used for increasing air flow when they’re stressed and for vocalization.

Any micro organisms or solid matter too large to pass through their air filtration system is managed by their immune system as microbacteria dissolve and transport the matter out of the way.

Proximans have a differentiating excophagus that takes the place of their air breathing trachea so that Proximans can drink liquids. To a degree Proximans are also able to eat dust or particle like food, allowing them to absorb nutrients and minerals from soft earth or sand, as well as through ground up food.

Proximans are able to vocalize astonishingly well considering a visible lack of anunciation systems. Their slits each have a vocal cord just above them. Their individual vocal cords are not able to cover as wide a variety as a Human vocal cord; however, with each vocal cord combined, Proximans are able to cover a broader and deeper spectrum of sound than Humans. They cannot normally produce sounds as high pitched as a Human could produce (note: no higher than C6, maybe D6 or E6 if a Proximan trained their vocal cords), however they can produce sounds much deeper than a Human could produce (note: down to octave -5). Using all 7 cords, an individual Proximan can sing with the voice of three and a half Humans, producing a sound that a Human would commonly describe as “beautifully harmonic.”

Behind each of the seven slits on a Proximan’s mouth, between the vocal cord and the flesh of the wall, is an additional fleshy cord that can expand or contract. These are used to mute, dampen, or silence individual vocal cords. A rapid contraction of the top or bottom dampeners can produce an audible “click,” or “pop,” as when these two dampeners are fully expanded, they create an air pocket in the mouth of the Proximan.

In additioan, the slits themselves can contract and close, instantly cutting off air. Combined with vocalizations, this can be used to create a “waa” sound as the slits open. The slits can be partially closed to let only a very thin amount of air through, producing a “sss” or “shh” sound. The clicks and pops, after some practice, could be used to produce “t” or “p” sounds. Producing “k” sounds are difficult for a Proximan, and “ch” sounds are nearly impossible. Vowels and soft consonants, such as “r,” “rrr,” “v,” “n,” and “m” are extraordinarily easy for them to pronounce. They would struggle with “b,” sounds, largely confusing the sound with a “wuh” sound until after good practice. (However, after all is said and done about vocalizations, Proximans prefer telepathic communication.)

Much like a lizard, a Proximan has two holes, one on either side of its head, which lead to membranes that are used for hearing. A Proximan can hear much deeper frequencies than a Human (down to octave -7), however they are incapable of hearing very high frequencies that Humans are capable of hearing (note: no higher than F#6).

Their skin comes in varying shades of blue. Their skin absorbs light from green to infrared, and uses it in a sort of photosynthesis very similar to plants. Their skin cells even posess chloroplasts and a unique type of chlorophyll.

After millennia of evolution contained within an advanced civilization, the differences between males and females has grown slimmer and slimmer until the primary difference has become sexual organs, with differences muscle cell production, fat cell production, neurophysiology, and hormones either reduced greatly or eliminated all together.

In comparison to Human females, Proximan females experience an overall milder pregnancy. The gestation period is nearly as long at sevenths months, however Proximans, lacking mammaries, lay eggs after seven months, which hatch within four months of being lain.

The egg has a mildly rubber like shell, allowing it to survive impacts with much greater success but being more susceptible to sharp objects or penetration. In addition, the egg also has chloroplasts in the outer most cells, speckling the otherwise white shell with blue particles, helping develop the embryo’s photosynthetic systems. As a result, Proximan females prefer to lay their eggs in soft, smoth, well lit areas. Direct sunlight and moonlight is preferable.

The eggs have a high resistance to heat. They can withstand several seconds of exposure to very high temperatures without taking any damage, and can withstand nearly a full minute of exposure to direct flame without any serious damage. However, eggs are highly susceptible to cold, and invariably die in the cold and cloudiness of winter. (Much of this the Proximans avoid by constructing incubators.)

A Proximan’s heart is the strongest muscle in its body (other than, arguably, its brain, metaphorically). It is large, durable, and has a calm beat, normally lasting an individual Proximan well over 200 Human years. With medical care and psionic fortification, a Proximan is nearly able to live as long as it wants to.

The Proximan race is believed to be entirely extinct at the time the first human survivor sets foot on Ibelis.
